UNDRR — Disaster Risk Reduction, Sierra Leone

A successful crisis communication depends on making information available in a language and format that people understand so that they can then take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their families. The aim of the project was to translate UNDRR terminology into West African languages — Kono, Krio, Limba, Mende and Themne — and into picture language. The result is a dictionary. In cooperation with YMCA Sierra Leone, UCL University College London and UN United Nations.

Picture language and Typeface

The challenge here is the creative translation of complex facts into readable pictograms that are also harmonized with cultural differences and understood by all inhabitants in Sierra Leone.

Thanks to the Pangea African typeface language extensions, we were able to typographically implement all content in the 5 main native languages.

„The symbols have been very helpful in our disaster risk reduction trainings, especially for low-literacy communities. In many rural areas, people cannot read or write, so oral communication and visual symbols are essential. The design work has significantly enhanced our community training, particularly in communicating complex messages in an accessible way.“
